There are several reasons why people want to find out more about their family tree.  Maybe you're doing a project for school or perhaps you need to find a long lost relative.  You may just be curious!  Whatever the reason, the internet has made it easier than ever to trace your family tree.   Before the days of the World Wide Web, people would spend hours at the library or at city hall going through archives and old paperwork.  At the end of it all, you never knew if all of your hard work would pay off.  In the 21^st century, we are able to find out our origins from the comfort of our couch.

                If you're just curious and don't want to actually pay to look up genealogy, there are several free family tree sites that you can check out.  Beware though, some of them do want you to register first.  Free family tree sites will let you look up a number of different things.  You can find dates of births, christenings, marriages, deaths and burials along with a number of other things.  When you put in your search information, you can be as broad or as specific as you like.  If you aren't sure of the exact year, you can ball park it and ask the search engine to look plus or minus a couple years from the exact year that you've given. 

                Several free family tree sites will also have pages that give you information on how to search.  There are articles that will give you guides on where to go if you need more personalized help.  There are also lists of family history centers.

                There are also free family tree sites that will actually create a family tree for you.  I've seen these given as gifts to grandparents before.  What  you need to do with these sites is enter in information about yourself and your parents  to create your account and then once you're in you can build your family tree, see celebrity family trees and also visit different forums to chat with people who are doing the same thing that you're doing.

                If you've already visited these free family tree sites and have come up empty handed,  don't get discouraged.  It takes some time digging around through archives and old photos to find what you really want.  Discovering your genealogy is a big project that will take awhile to complete.
